Angèle feat. Roméo Elvis - Tout Oublier

  • both siblings

  • Roméo Elvis 28 years old Belgian rapper and hip hop artist

  • Angèle 25 years old - focuses on R&B and pop genre

Music video : A Narrative music video

Context:

this music video, like you might have seen is quite different and interesting, you could even call it strange...

the title being ¨ Tout Oublier¨ meaning forgetting everything links greatly with the narrative of the clip. As you might have seen none of what is going on in this clip initially makes sense, which mirrors the idea of wanting to forget everything.

As the idea of wearing ski clothing and attire at the beach seems absolutely obscure.

this in my opinion almost makes it a niche music video and indie as it isn't the typical music video that you would see everyday.

I must add that i think that it might be a cultural aspect, as like you will see in a future post there is a very similar style of music video with another Belgian artist which could be quite interesting to investigate as it may be something about Belgian codes and conventions.

MISE EN SCENE:

Lighting-

You will notice that in this music video the colour scheme is rather restricted and vibrant colours are present as well. This is because a pastel shades and vibrant shades.

This is also present to give the audience the sense of ¨surrealism¨ like a sort of fairytale something that just is not real. This in my opinion works greatly as whatever is going on in this music video makes absolutely no sense.

Costumes/Performance -

this music video has a few different conventions that it portrays. it's a narrative video but also performing music video. in a couple of scenes you will be able to notice dancing in the middle of a ¨everyday¨ situation which makes absolutely no sense, which is why it breaks the codes and conventions.

this is shown in the video clips seen below as well as the editing techniques.

The costumes in this music video are kept relatively simple and ¨normal¨ teh sort of colourful outfits anyone could genuinely wear

Editing

there are many different editing techniques in this music video, although the one I would say that stands out and really enhances this music video is the use of a tracking camera. the way the artist walk around the room and the camera follows them really gives the video a sense of intimacy and gets the audience feel like they are in the room with them. I think that it is also quite important to add that this music video looks more like a movie rather than the "classic" music video you can encounter where you would typically see closeups of the artists etc...

Representation:

differently to the other two videos this music video is rather niche and alternative to most music videos of this genre. The idea that this is a different culture, Belgian rather than American plays a big part of this. Most of pop music videos all follow the ¨American¨ style nowadays following very strict codes and conventions.

This video on the other hand, makes absolutely no sense, nothing in this music video makes sense straight away. It is important to notice that most of Her music video and even songs play a lot around the sense of irony, she plays a lot around the words and the images follow a deeper meaning than what you can just see, which is completely opposite to most american music videos where they seem more lazy and they use the technique of dumbing down almost making a low culture music video
