MISE EN SCENE
I n this music video there is a variation of different location - showing once again one and only thing, the artist herself. I chose this specific outdated video of Dua Lipa as I really liked the simplicity of it in comparison of many pop music videos we may encounter in 2021. This specific video came out in 2014, which is why it may not seem as exciting as the pop music videos of nowadays. Although, this music video is one of the only videos that resemble the most of what I want my music video to look like in terms of locations, which is also why I decided to focus on analysing it.
Lighting-
the use of lighting in this music video is varied, it mainly uses natural ambient lighting like shown down below but also has a great contrast with the night life lights shown in the shots down below as well.
its also interesting to look at the use of editing when it comes to lighting as seen in the third image which was supposed to a sort of "surreal" feel to it like utopia but also retro. although this isn't something I would consider in my music video I still really think it worked for her video and the time period it was filmed at.
I would say that the tones in this music video is rather neutral and almost washed out like out of life in some shots such as the one seen below in the chair
it's also such a contrast to her other clips of her in the nightlife neon lights
Costume and makeup-
although this was filmed a long time ago and the style nowadays may not still be same, keeping it in perspective, her looks are rather successful. she uses a variation of different styles to accentuate the mood and atmosphere of the location. This may be to show the different sides of her personality and mood of the song
the acting -
it's important to also consider the acting in the music videos. it takes much more than just saying the words.
in this particular music video just like many of music videos, it's aim (as well as promoting their song) is to make the audience want to feel like they can be the main character making them feel powerful, which i am sure we all do when we listen to a certain song that we like.
the body language is crucial, showing assurance as well as confidence making the audience know that it is you an not anybody else. This was clearly visible in this music video.
Editing and Camera work-
i think that it was important for me to add that the camera work and editing in this music video was spot on when it comes to what i want in mine. the camera is kept very simple and so is the editing which you will be able to see in the clip right above
the slow mo shots are very efficient in this music video, they work well with the idea that the music is not necessarily slow but it works great together. this is also something i would like to consider in mine
the use of shot reverse shot between the back and forth of the different locations of shots is also a very common pop code and conventions which was also visible in my other review of the R&B
the use of colours added in the editing is also interesting and i believe works great with the style of the music
the use of montage is also very effective and simple cuts and cut jumps run in very smoothly which i really liked
